Samuel Laycock Latest – 26.1.24

There are plenty of updates from this week, so let’s get straight to it!

Social Skills at Lunch

We are working with a number of pupils to support their social skills during lunch time.

Savannah and Sibel loved having lunch together on Friday!

National Railway Museum

The Digital Pathway visited the National Railway Museum in York on Friday. This is in preparation for their unit of work on Transport. We enjoyed sitting on the Japanese Bullet train, watching the model railway, looking at all the station signs and taking photographs of the old trains.

We were a week too early but got a glimpse of The Flying Scotsman!

Hydrotherapy

Musah, Paul and Harvey from KS3 communication pathway are really enjoying their sessions in the hydrotherapy pool.

They are working on team work at the same time as growing their confidence in the water.

Food Sources

This term pupils in 7L are looking at food sources – where our food comes from. We have learnt so far what food is from an animal source and what food is from a plant source.

The taste test lessons have been quite an eye opener for us all! One pupil said “Miss I have never tried this, but it’s our lesson so I’ve got to give it a go.” Over the next few weeks we will be planning and making some meals based on the different food sources.

Travel & Tourism

During our career lessons so far this term, 7L have been looking at the different roles around travel and tourism. We have learnt the job role of a receptionist. We have worked as a housekeeper. We have packed up our camera and gone travelling far and wide to try our hand at being a travel photographer!

Wonder what we will be doing next week?

Telephone Cups

7W decided to combine our Science topic of sound and our Living Skills topic of communication and created our own telephone cups! We created one set with a long string and one set with a short string to test whether the length of the string made a difference to how well we can hear through the telephone cups.

We made predictions before we tested the telephone cups and then we evaluated our experiment afterwards. We really enjoyed making and testing these!

Block Coding

In ICT lessons, 8SW have been learning how to code using purple mash. The children have completed a variety of challenges where they have written their own code using prompts before progressing onto ‘block coding’.

They have made great progress and had lots of fun doing so.

Mime!

8P have been enjoying fabulous drama lessons this half term. They have been learning about Marcel Marceau and mime, focusing specifically on how he uses the 3 main features of his face.

The pupils then designed their own mime faces and transformed themselves into their creations!

University Trip

This week a group of Year 11 pupils had the opportunity to visit Manchester Met University. The purpose of the trip was to show them what life is like for students when they are studying at university, experience a tour of a university campus and explore different job roles available at a university. The pupils received a talk in one of the Brooks Building lecture theatres that highlighted the different routes into higher education and the support that is offered to students through the Student Union and academic support systems. There was also the opportunity to link up with New Bridge College who had 4 students on long term work experience placements at the university.

The New Bridge College students engage in a range of jobs that include laboratory and digital technician roles, a receptionist and an assistant in the Brew and Cake Cafe. For some of our Year 11 pupils who are wishing to attend New Bridge College, this gave them the perfect taste of what future experiences may look like for them. We would like to thank Ivan and his team for hosting us and we hope to visit again next year.

Buildings & Architecture

As part of their Art topic of Buildings and Architecture, pupils from 9M were challenged to make the tallest tower that could support a tennis ball, with only paper and tape.

The ultimate champion was Isabella with her metre tall tower.

Visit to Manchester City!

Over the next two weeks, the KS4 class will be visiting Manchester City Football club. Today, the first group attended the sensory room and tour of the stadium. We were taken around the VIP lounges and shown the players’ private boxes. In the sensory room we enjoyed playing with the interactive floor, listening to music and watching the staff get the pitch ready for the next game.
The pupils behaved beautifully and have not stopped talking about the visit since we got back to school!
